Many in these times associate the word Gnosis with a collection of texts found in the deserts of the Middle East, such as the Nag Hammadhi texts or Dead Sea Scrolls. Some believe that Gnosis is exclusively the belief system of long-lost groups of spiritual seekers like the Essenes or Nazarenes. In truth, these writings and groups were but one fraction of a much older, more widespread understanding.
While some have argued that the remarkable ubiquity of common themes, principles and symbols in religions are mere happenstance, the truth is far more powerful. Such clear similarities exist because the many sacred traditions of the world share the same core knowledge.
The same mysteries are traditionally taught within the innermost sanctum of every great tradition. This knowledge is veiled within the devotional acts and wisdom teachings of Sufism, the deepest profundities of Vajrayana Buddhism, the Kabalah of Judaism, the sacred rites of Eleusis, the highest yogic tantras of Hinduism, the secret teachings of Jesus to his disciples, or the carefully guarded initiatic rites of the world’s mystery schools ever-present throughout history. This is Gnosis.
